Psychology in Schools
I am interested in psychology because it is my minor, but also because i think that thinking outside the box is a great way to think for a teacher. Having knowledge of peoples mental awareness, their behavior and reasons for their behavior and much more comes from psychology and is all needed in the teaching career.
The things I have learned
  • I have learned the definition of psychology.
  • Psychology:
    • The scientific study of the human mind and its functions, esp. those affecting behavior in a given context
    • The mental characteristics or attitude of a person or group
    • The mental and emotional factors governing a situation or activity
  • I have learned about programs that teachers are getting involved in and how they are being used to help classrooms. This is shown in resource 1.

  • How psychology is used in every aspect of a school with either teachers teaching methods, students ability to learn, communication and behaviors of schools etc.

  • I found out many more different types of psychology "branches", and that educational psychology is an actual branch and used for many teachers.

  • Many students find studies and psychology interesting and I feel like it should be taught more in school so they can learn more about people and their behaviors as well. I found out this fact because of all the different student lead experiments.

Resources

1.

This video explains a program in a few head start schools that educate teachers about positive reinforcement and behavioral methods. With these teaching methods teachers are able to help these students that are in lower income neighborhoods feel more adequate at school. They also work very hard to make it so that the kids happy and enjoy class and enjoy their teacher instead of being scared that they will get yelled at or feel like they are doing everything wrong.
I give this video a 5/5 because I really enjoy the idea of the program and it explains what the program is and how it works.

2.

This is a skit done by some students on how the effect of positive and negative reinforcement and how it effects students. Although the video is just a skit I do feel that it does show a students perspective on how being told they have done a good job helps their motivation and their attitude toward school and their personal progress.
I give this video a 3/5 because it isn't educational but it is a good visual.

3.

This video is an experiment with a five year old boy showing his capability to comprehend the amount of water in a cup. I feel like this video is a good video to explain why psychology is important for teachers to get a grasp on because they can learn the different ages and stages that kids go through in school. Then teachers don't over challenge their students but can also teach them to their highest potential.
I give this video a 4/5 because I think that it does show a clear reason why teachers should have psychology with their teaching methods.

4. Psychology of Teaching and learning
This website talks about specifically how psychology helps in the classroom, such as the context, the classroom processes and much more. It explains that if a teacher has a good grasp on these psychological teaching methods then they can have a better grasp on their classroom.
I give this website a 5/5 it is very educational and interesting and useful.

5. Educational Psychology
This is a short book about educational psychology and how teachers, students, classrooms, and schools benefit from this type of psychology. This is very long and probably too long but I did look at certain pages and the content on those pages were very interesting and useful.
I give this website a 3/5 because it is very, very long so unless your interested I wouldn't suggest it.

6.Types of Psychology
This website gives a brief description about many different types of psychology. Then once you click on the links it will go more in detail about they type of psychology. These different types of psychology give people different ways to think, to teach, to learn etc. It doesn't specifically talk about how psychology in the classroom is a good tool, but it does give a lot of information.
I give this website a 3/5 because there is a lot of information, but it is not specific to my exact topic at hand.

7.

This video is an experiment on kids tasting if a drink is coke or diet coke, but the underlying experiment is do people believe in themselves or take the word of an authority over anything else. I feel like if teachers know how to make it so that students respect them and listen to them in a way that they are looked as a nice authoritative person then they can control a classroom more efficiently.
I give this a 3/5 because I enjoy the study because I looked at it in a way that was helpful to a classroom but just watching it, it is an experiment that doesn't have to do directly with a classroom.

8.

This is a magic card trick that is done by just visual effects that the mind does to people. This is a fun video that can be done in the classroom for fun but also its a cool way to look at how the brain can trick us if we are not open to the illusions that it can portray.
I give this website a 4/5 because I think it is fun and short and a nice way to relax a good hard days work.
